Hampton Roads Animal Control Agencies

The animal control agencies of Hampton Roads are charged with enforcing animal welfare laws, picking up lost or stray animals, investigating mistreatment and cruelty as well as educating citizens about responsible pet ownership.

Not all animal control agencies operate a municipal animal shelter as in Hampton, Newport News, Portsmouth, Gloucester and Mathews County, these agencies contract with private, non-profit animal shelters to house, adopt or euthanize animals.

Duties and services offered to residents may vary, so please refer any inquiries to the animal control agency in your city of residence.

Hampton Roads Peninsula Animal Control Agencies

Most of the animal control agencies on the Peninsula do not operate a municipal shelter. These animal control agencies contract to use the Peninsula SPCA, the Heritage Humane Society or the Gloucester/Matthews Humane Society for sheltering services.
